San Diego’s Newest Scientific Research Hub, Callan Ridge, Makes Its Mark

Callan Ridge, the newest addition to San Diego’s premier scientific research hub – Torrey Pines, is an innovative three-story campus, nestled within Healthpeak’s 20-acre Torrey Pines Science Park and is a testament of their commitment to advanced design and sustainable practices.

The two-building complex is designed with simplicity and connectivity in mind. Upon arrival, visitors are welcomed by a canopy, integrated with photovoltaic panels, providing walkways and outdoor event spaces with ample natural light. The grand outdoor staircase, accented with greenery, fosters collaboration and conversations—essential for the exchange of ideas in a research-driven environment.

Callan Ridge is strategically oriented to maximize easterly canyon views, and features San Diego’s largest single-building green roof. This “infinity garden” seamlessly blends with the natural landscape of the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, reducing heat island effects, attracting pollinators, and offering a unique and refreshing outdoor space.

In line with its commitment to sustainability, this LEED Gold-targeted campus incorporates cutting-edge green technologies. Glass windows automatically adjust to control sunlight and heat, while steel and concrete materials boast high levels of recycled content. This sustainable approach extends to water conservation with recycled irrigation, low-water-use plants, and low-flow plumbing fixtures.

Callan Ridge serves as the replacement of two previously existing life science buildings from 1983. PMA’s role in the conceptual design phase, in collaboration with FPBA, was pivotal in creating a campus that not only enhances the utilization of the scenic views but also increases the square footage through strategic planning and sustainable practices.
